Georgia 6.PAR.8.1
The Standard
Locate and position rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line; find and position pairs of integers and other rational numbers on a coordinate plane.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Graph rational numbers as points on the coordinate plane to represent and solve contextual, mathematical problems; draw polygons using the coordinates for their vertices and find the length of a side of a polygon.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify where positive and negative integers, fractions, and decimals belong on horizontal and vertical number lines. They also plot ordered pairs on a coordinate plane using the correct axis order.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately place positive and negative integers, fractions, and decimals on number lines with different scales. They plot ordered pairs by moving along the x-axis first, then the y-axis.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think negative numbers farther from zero are greater. They may reverse the x and y coordinates or move in the wrong direction. Fractions and decimals can also be misplaced when intervals are not labeled by ones.
How to Assess It
- On an exit ticket, ask students to plot -1.5 and 3/4 on a number line, then plot and label (-2, 1.5) on a coordinate plane.

Ways to Teach It
Make a floor number line with tape, then have students stand at locations shown on integer, fraction, and decimal cards.
Ask students to explain how they would plot (-2.5, 3/4), including which direction they move first and why.
Play coordinate bingo by calling ordered pairs while students mark matching points on prepared coordinate grids.
Use temperatures and elevations to place rational numbers on a vertical scale, including values below zero and between labeled marks.
