What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students turn situations into variables, equations, tables, or diagrams, then explain what each number and symbol represents. They use units and context to judge whether a result is reasonable.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can define a variable, build and solve an equation, and connect each term to the original situation. The student labels units and checks whether the answer makes sense.

Common Misconceptions

Students may write an equation without defining the variable or linking numbers to the situation. They may drop units, treat every number as relevant, or report a negative or fractional answer that does not fit the context.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A gym charges $25 plus $8 per visit. Your total is $73. Write and solve an equation, then explain each quantity.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use cups and counters to model equal groups, then replace the materials with a variable equation and label what each term represents.

  2. Ask students to explain why 3x + 5 = 26 could fit one situation but not another, using units as evidence.

  3. Play a card match with situation, equation, solution, and interpretation cards, requiring students to justify each completed set.

  4. Compare two phone plans using tables and equations, then decide which plan costs less for different amounts of monthly data.
