What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect numbers and symbols to real quantities in a situation. They move between a story, a model, and an equation while keeping track of units and meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students write an equation or expression that matches a story, then connect the result back to the situation. They explain what each number and unit means and check whether the answer is reasonable.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose an operation just because they see certain numbers or words. They may drop units, use every number given, or give an answer that does not fit the situation.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Six bags hold four apples each. Write an expression, solve it, label the answer, and explain what each number represents.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs cups and counters to model four cups with six counters each, then have them write and label a matching equation.

  2. Ask students to explain how 5 × 7 represents five boxes with seven crayons in each box before finding the total.

  3. Play a card-matching game where students pair story cards with equations, diagrams, and labeled answers.

  4. Use a classroom supply list with prices and quantities, then have students calculate a total and explain what each number represents.
