What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the question, known information, missing information, and relevant quantities. They choose a strategy, monitor their work, and switch approaches when the first plan fails.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain the problem in their own words and select a workable starting strategy. They track whether the strategy is working, revise it when needed, and verify the result.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may combine every number in the problem without deciding what each one means. They may stop after one failed attempt or accept an answer without checking units and reasonableness.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “A phone plan costs $25 plus $8 per gigabyte. With $73, how many whole gigabytes can you buy?” Require a plan, work, and a check.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs algebra tiles and a multistep equation, then require two different solution paths and a check using substitution.
Ask students to write: “Where did you get stuck, what did you try next, and how did you know your answer worked?”
Run a strategy relay where teams solve one problem using a table, diagram, equation, or graph, then compare methods.
Have students plan a class snack purchase within a fixed budget, accounting for package sizes, prices, tax, and leftovers.
