What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students figure out what a problem is asking, choose useful information, and plan a way to solve it. They keep working when the first approach fails, then check and explain their answer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies the question, relevant facts, and needed steps before calculating. The student tries another strategy when stuck, checks the result, and explains why the answer fits the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may grab the visible numbers and calculate without deciding what the question asks. They may think one failed strategy means the problem cannot be solved, or stop after finding an answer without checking it.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A class needs 128 pencils. Pencils come in boxes of 12. How many boxes are needed? Show, label, and check your work.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs 48 counters and a multi-step sharing problem, then require a model, a solution, and a second strategy.
Ask students to write: “Where did you get stuck, what did you try next, and how did you know your answer made sense?”
Play Strategy Swap: students solve a problem, trade papers, and continue a partner’s unfinished work using a different method.
Use a grocery budget and store flyer to plan meals, revise choices after overspending, and explain why the final plan works.
