Georgia 7.PAR.4.6
The Standard
Solve everyday problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Recognize proportional relationships in relevant, mathematical problems; represent, solve, and explain these relationships with tables, graphs, and equations.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use a scale ratio to find missing lengths and areas in diagrams, maps, and plans. They also redraw figures at a new scale while keeping corresponding side lengths proportional.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly calculate actual lengths and areas, include units, and explain how the scale factor was used. They can redraw a figure at a new scale while keeping all side lengths proportional.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the scale ratio or mix drawing units with actual units. They often multiply area by the length scale factor instead of its square. Some resize only one dimension, which changes the figure’s shape.
How to Assess It
- Give students a 3 cm by 5 cm rectangle with a scale of 1 cm to 4 m. Ask for the actual dimensions and area, then have them redraw it using 1 cm to 2 m.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs graph paper and rulers to measure a simple floor plan, calculate actual dimensions, then redraw it using a different scale.
Ask students to explain why doubling every side length makes a rectangle’s area four times larger, using numbers or a sketch.
Play a matching game with cards showing scale drawings, scale ratios, actual dimensions, and areas that belong together.
Use a local park map to calculate trail lengths, field dimensions, and land areas from the printed scale.
