Georgia 6.PAR.8.4
The Standard
Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to find the length of a side joining points with the same x-coordinate or the same y-coordinate.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Graph rational numbers as points on the coordinate plane to represent and solve contextual, mathematical problems; draw polygons using the coordinates for their vertices and find the length of a side of a polygon.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plot ordered pairs accurately and connect the vertices in the stated order to make a polygon. They find horizontal and vertical side lengths by taking the absolute difference of the coordinates that change.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student plots each vertex in the correct location and connects the points in the given order. They calculate horizontal and vertical side lengths using absolute differences and label the lengths with units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the x and y values, mishandle negative coordinates, or connect vertices in the wrong order. They may count grid points instead of unit spaces, or report a negative side length after subtracting coordinates.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Plot A(-4, 1), B(2, 1), C(2, 5), and D(-4, 5), connect them in order, and label each side length. Show coordinate subtraction for AB and BC.

Ways to Teach It
Give students graph paper and colored pencils to plot a four-vertex figure, connect the points, and label all horizontal and vertical side lengths.
Ask students to explain why the distance from (-3, 2) to (4, 2) is 7 units without counting grid spaces.
Play a partner challenge where one student names polygon coordinates and the other plots, connects, and measures the figure before switching roles.
Use coordinates to create a simple park map, then find the lengths of straight paths between locations sharing an x-coordinate or y-coordinate.
