Georgia 6.PAR.8.3
The Standard
Solve problems by graphing points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Include use of coordinates and absolute value to find distances between points with the same x-coordinate or the same y-coordinate.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Graph rational numbers as points on the coordinate plane to represent and solve contextual, mathematical problems; draw polygons using the coordinates for their vertices and find the length of a side of a polygon.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plot ordered pairs in every quadrant and use the points to solve problems. They find distances between points sharing an x-coordinate or y-coordinate using absolute value.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately plot ordered pairs in all four quadrants. They find horizontal or vertical distances by subtracting the matching coordinates and taking the absolute value.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often reverse the x and y coordinates or miss a negative sign when plotting. They may count grid lines instead of unit spaces. Some add coordinate values rather than finding the absolute value of their difference.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to plot A(-3, 4), B(2, 4), C(2, -1), and D(-3, -1), then find AB and BC using absolute value expressions.

Ways to Teach It
Make a floor coordinate grid with tape, then have students stand at ordered pairs and measure horizontal or vertical distances.
Ask students to explain why the distance from (-4, 2) to (3, 2) is positive even though one coordinate is negative.
Play coordinate card match, where students pair points sharing an x-coordinate or y-coordinate and score the correct distance.
Use a city map grid to locate buildings and calculate straight east-west or north-south distances between them.
