What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plot ordered pairs on a coordinate plane using the x-coordinate first and the y-coordinate second. They explain what each value means within a problem or map.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly plot and label ordered pairs in the first quadrant. They explain that the first number gives the horizontal position and the second gives the vertical position.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the x- and y-coordinates or move vertically before moving horizontally. They may ignore the axis scale, count grid lines incorrectly, or treat the origin as (1, 1).
How to Assess It
- Give students a first-quadrant grid and ask: “Plot (4, 2), then explain what each coordinate tells you to do.”

Ways to Teach It
Tape a coordinate grid on the floor, then have students stand at ordered pairs called from a set of task cards.
Ask students to explain in writing why (2, 5) and (5, 2) name different locations.
Play coordinate bingo by calling ordered pairs while students mark matching points on first-quadrant game boards.
Give students a zoo map grid and have them plot animal locations, then describe what each coordinate represents.
