The Standard

Use ratios to convert within measurement systems (customary and metric) to solve authentic problems that exist in everyday life.

Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Solve a variety of contextual problems involving ratios, unit rates, equivalent ratios, percentages, and conversions within measurement systems using proportional reasoning.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use known measurement relationships to rewrite a quantity in a different unit within the same system. They use equivalent ratios or conversion factors to solve practical problems.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select the correct conversion relationship and set up an equivalent ratio with matching units. They calculate accurately, label the answer, and check whether its size makes sense.

Common Misconceptions

Students often multiply when they should divide, or use the conversion factor backward. They may move a decimal the wrong direction in metric conversions. Some change the number but forget that the actual quantity stays equal.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A 3-yard ribbon is cut into 8-inch pieces. Show a ratio-based conversion, then find the number of complete pieces and leftover ribbon.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up stations where students measure classroom objects in one unit, then use ratio tables to convert each measurement to another unit.

  2. Ask students to explain whether 3 quarts or 10 cups is greater, using a labeled ratio or conversion equation as evidence.

  3. Give pairs conversion cards and quantity cards, then have them race to match equivalent measurements and record the ratio used.

  4. Plan drinks for a team picnic by converting milliliters to liters and calculating how many bottles are needed for the group.
