Georgia 6.NR.4.4
The Standard
Describe the concept of rates and unit rate in the context of a ratio relationship.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Solve a variety of contextual problems involving ratios, unit rates, equivalent ratios, percentages, and conversions within measurement systems using proportional reasoning.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify when two quantities form a rate and name the units being compared. They explain a unit rate as the amount for one unit of another quantity.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given 150 miles in 3 hours, a student states 50 miles per hour and explains that 50 miles are traveled each hour. The student includes correct units and connects 150:3 to 50:1.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call any ratio a rate, even when both quantities use the same unit. They may divide in the wrong order or omit units from answers.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A printer makes 84 pages in 6 minutes. Find the unit rate and explain what it means in one sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Have students time a toy car over a measured distance, then calculate and label its distance traveled per second.
Ask, "What does 60 miles per hour tell you that 180 miles in 3 hours does not show directly?"
Play a card-matching game connecting contexts, ratios, unit rates, and labels such as dollars per pound or words per minute.
Use grocery ads to compare package prices by finding cost per ounce and explaining which purchase offers the lower rate.
