Georgia 6.NR.4.2

Math6th GradeNumerical Reasoning

The Standard

Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole-number measurements, find missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students create rows of number pairs that keep the same multiplicative relationship. They fill in missing values, graph the pairs as ordered points, and compare two relationships using their tables.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students complete a ratio table accurately and explain the scale factor used in each row. They plot ordered pairs correctly and use the table or graph to decide which ratio is greater or equivalent.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add the same amount to both quantities instead of multiplying both by the same factor. They may reverse coordinate pairs, skip the origin, or compare ratios using only one quantity.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A machine packs 3 boxes in 2 minutes. Complete (3, 2), (6, __), (__, 6), plot the pairs, and decide whether 12 boxes in 8 minutes has the same rate.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use colored counters to build 2 red for every 3 blue, record four scaled pairs, then graph the pairs.

  2. Ask students to explain why adding 2 to both parts of a ratio does not usually make an equivalent ratio.

  3. Play a card sort matching ratio situations, completed tables, and coordinate graphs that show the same relationship.

  4. Use grocery ads to build tables for two package deals, then compare how much product each dollar buys.
