Georgia 6.NR.3.2
The Standard
Order and plot integers on a number line and use distance from zero to discover the connection between integers and their opposites.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Solve a variety of problems involving whole numbers and their opposites; model rational numbers on a number line to describe problems presented in relevant, mathematical situations.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students place positive integers, negative integers, and zero in correct locations on a number line. They compare and order integers, then use distance from zero to identify opposite pairs.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given integers such as -7, -2, 0, and 5, students place them correctly and order them from least to greatest. They identify opposite pairs and explain that each pair lies the same distance from zero on different sides.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a number with a larger digit is always greater, so they rank -8 above -3. They may treat the negative sign as subtraction or confuse an opposite with a reciprocal. Some think zero has no opposite.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Plot -6, -2, 0, and 4 on a number line, order them least to greatest, and name the opposite of -6. Ask students to state how far -6 is from zero.

Ways to Teach It
Tape a floor number line, then have students stand on assigned integer cards and pair with classmates equally far from zero.
Ask, “Why is negative eight less than negative three even though eight is greater than three?” Require a number-line explanation.
Play Integer Line-Up: teams draw five integer cards, arrange them least to greatest, and earn a point after a correct explanation.
Give daily temperatures from several cities and ask students to plot, order, and identify temperatures equally far above and below zero.
