What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect positive numbers, negative numbers, and zero to situations such as temperatures, elevations, and account balances. They locate, order, and compare integers while explaining what zero represents in each situation.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students place integers correctly on a number line and order them using <, >, or =. They explain that zero is a reference point whose meaning depends on the situation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think -8 is greater than -3 because 8 is greater than 3. They may label zero as positive or negative. They may also give zero the same meaning in every context.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Three locations have elevations of -12 feet, 0 feet, and 7 feet relative to sea level. Order them from least to greatest, compare -12 and 7 with a symbol, and explain what 0 means.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Lay a masking-tape number line, then have students place temperature and elevation cards and state what zero means for each context.

  2. Write whether -9 is greater than -4, then justify the answer with a number line and a real situation.

  3. Pairs draw integer cards, place them on a number line, and earn a point for choosing the correct comparison symbol.

  4. Use a weather map to compare city temperatures, then discuss what 0 degrees means and how temperatures below zero are ordered.
