What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students move between real situations and mathematical representations. They identify quantities, units, and relationships, use numbers and symbols, then explain what their results mean in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can turn a word problem into an expression or equation without losing the meaning of each number. They track units, estimate reasonably, and interpret the answer in the original situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may calculate with every number in a problem without first deciding what each number represents. They may drop units, confuse related quantities, or give an answer that does not fit the situation.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Four movie tickets cost $38. Write an expression for the cost per ticket, solve it, and label the answer.” Ask students to explain what 38 and 4 represent.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs cups and counters to model a short situation, then have them write an expression and label what each number means.
Ask students to write about how the meanings of 24 ÷ 6 change in two different real-world situations.
Play a matching game with cards showing situations, expressions, diagrams, and answers labeled with units.
Have students compare grocery unit prices, write the calculations, and explain which purchase is the better value.
