What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify the value of each digit in a decimal through the thousandths place. They move between a numeral, its number name, and an addition expression showing each place value.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can read 7.402 as seven and four hundred two thousandths and write it from spoken words. They can expand it as 7 + 0.4 + 0.002 and keep zero placeholders correct.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse tenths, hundredths, and thousandths or ignore zeros that hold a place. They may expand 5.204 as 5 + 0.2 + 0.04 instead of 5 + 0.2 + 0.004.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Write 42.508 in words and expanded notation, then circle the digit worth eight thousandths.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a place-value mat and digit cards; call out three and forty-two thousandths for them to build and record.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing how the zeros change the values of 4.006 and 4.060.

  3. Play a matching game with cards showing numerals, number names, and expanded notation for the same decimal.

  4. Label metric measurements such as 1.375 liters, then have students write each measurement in words and expanded notation.
