What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read numbers up to 999,999 aloud and write spoken numbers as digits. They break each number into the value of its digits using expanded form.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a spoken number, numeral, or expanded form, a student accurately converts it to the other forms. They use zeros as placeholders and correctly identify each digit's value.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat each digit as its face value, writing 7,000 instead of 70,000 for a 7 in the ten-thousands place. They may drop placeholder zeros or add nonexistent place values when changing spoken numbers or expanded form into numerals.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Write "four hundred six thousand, seventy-two" as a numeral, expand it, then read 530,408 aloud to the teacher.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build 352,406 with place-value disks on a chart, then record the numeral and expanded form.

  2. Students write an answer to the prompt, "How do the zeros in 408,025 affect how we read and expand the number?"

  3. Partners draw six digit cards, build a number, and earn a point by writing and reading its expanded form correctly.

  4. Use attendance figures from four Georgia stadiums, and have students record each as a numeral and in expanded form.
