What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students round multi-digit whole numbers to a given place, such as the nearest ten, hundred, or thousand. They use place value to decide whether the number is closer to the lower or higher multiple.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students round the same multi-digit number to any named place and explain which two multiples it falls between. They use the digit to the right or a number line to justify the nearest value.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may look only at the digit being rounded instead of the digit to its right. They may change digits in other places or forget to replace trailing digits with zeros.
How to Assess It
- Give students 47,386 and ask them to round it to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand. Have them circle the digit that determined each answer.
