What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students locate a number between two multiples of ten or two multiples of one hundred. They use the midpoint and place value to decide which multiple is closer.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student identifies the two benchmark multiples around a number and finds the midpoint. They choose the closer multiple and round midpoint values up. They can explain their choice with place value or a number line.

Common Misconceptions

Students may check the wrong digit, such as using the tens digit when rounding to the nearest ten. They may always round down or treat a midpoint as staying put. Some do not realize that 950 rounds to 1,000 when rounding to the nearest hundred.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Round 347 to the nearest ten and nearest hundred. Draw or label a number line to justify both answers.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place number cards on open number lines made from adding machine tape, then use clothespins to mark the nearest ten or hundred.

  2. Ask students to explain why 349 rounds to 350 by tens but 300 by hundreds.

  3. Play Rounding Match with number cards and rounded-value cards, awarding a point only when the player names both surrounding benchmarks.

  4. Use a school fundraiser total of $684 and have students estimate it to the nearest $10 and $100 for a quick report.
