Georgia 3.NR.4.1

Math3rd GradeNumerical Reasoning

The Standard

Describe a unit fraction and explain how multiple copies of a unit fraction form a non-unit fraction. Use parts of a whole, parts of a set, points on a number line, distances on a number line and area models.

Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Represent fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 in multiple ways within a framework using visual models.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify 1/b as one of b equal shares, then combine those shares to make fractions such as 3/4 or 5/8. They show fractions with wholes, sets, area models, and number lines.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can identify the unit fraction in a model and use repeated copies to name a larger fraction. They can represent the same fraction with a whole, a set, an area model, and a number line.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count shaded pieces for the denominator instead of counting all equal pieces. They may accept unequal sections as equal shares. On number lines, they may count tick marks instead of spaces between ticks.

How to Assess It

Give students a rectangle, a set of eight dots, and a number line, each divided or grouped into eighths. Ask them to show 5/8 and explain how five copies of 1/8 make 5/8.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students paper strips to fold into eighths, label each section 1/8, then shade five sections and name the resulting fraction.

  2. Display 4/6 on an area model and ask students to write how many copies of 1/6 are shown.

  3. Create matching cards with fractions, area models, sets, and number lines, then have pairs build groups of equivalent representations.

  4. Give students eight classroom pencils, mark three with tape, and ask what fraction of the set is marked and how 1/8 builds it.
