Expectations in This Standard
3.NR.4 is a Georgia mathematics standard. These are the expectations under it.
- 3.NR.4.1
Describe a unit fraction and explain how multiple copies of a unit fraction form a non-unit fraction. Use parts of a whole, parts of a set, points on a number l...
- 3.NR.4.2
Compare two unit fractions by flexibly using a variety of tools and strategies.
- 3.NR.4.3
Represent fractions, including fractions greater than one, in multiple ways.
- 3.NR.4.4
Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students represent fractions with pictures, objects, sets, and number lines. They partition each whole into equal parts and connect the denominator to total parts and the numerator to selected parts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students create and label area, set, and number line models for a given fraction. They divide wholes into equal parts and explain how the numerator and denominator match each model.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count all partition lines instead of counting equal parts. They may accept unequal pieces, confuse numerator and denominator, or think a larger denominator means a larger piece.
How to Assess It
- Give students the fraction 3/4. Ask them to draw an area model and a number line model, then label what each number means.

Ways to Teach It
Give students paper strips to fold into halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, and eighths, then shade and label selected fractions.
Show two different models of 3/4 and ask students to write how both show the same fraction.
Play fraction match with cards showing symbols, shaded shapes, sets, and number lines using the allowed denominators.
Use a paper pizza menu and ask students to show how different equal slice counts can represent fractions of one pizza.
