What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use fraction strips, area models, and number lines to find fractions that name the same amount. They explain equivalence by comparing equal-sized wholes and matching endpoints or shaded areas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can show that 1/2, 2/4, and 4/8 name the same amount. They can create another equivalent fraction and justify it with a visual model.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compare only numerators or denominators, or think a larger denominator means a larger fraction. They may use different-sized wholes, count partition lines instead of equal parts, or change only one number.
How to Assess It
- Give students blank fraction strips and ask them to show fractions equal to 1/2 using denominators 4 and 8. Have them label each model and explain why the amounts are equal.

Ways to Teach It
Fold identical paper strips into halves, fourths, and eighths, then align them to record all matching lengths.
Display 2/3 and 4/6 area models, then ask students to write one sentence explaining why both name the same amount.
Play Equivalent Fraction Match with cards showing symbols, shaded models, and number-line points; students collect sets representing the same value.
Use measuring cups to compare 1/2 cup with two 1/4 cups, then draw and label the matching amounts.
