The Standard
Ask questions and answer them based on gathered information, observations, and appropriate graphical displays to compare and order whole numbers.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Use appropriate tools to measure, order, and compare intervals of length and time, as well as denominations of money to solve real-life, mathematical problems and analyze graphical displays of data to answer relevant questions.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students gather or observe simple data and show the counts in a graph. They ask and answer questions, compare the counts, and order them.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student reads each value on a simple graph accurately. The student asks an answerable question, supports the answer with data, and orders the values correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may compare category names instead of the numbers shown. They may read the tallest bar correctly but reverse least and greatest when ordering several values.
How to Assess It
- Give students a three-category picture graph. Have them write one question the graph can answer, answer it, and order the three counts from least to greatest.

Ways to Teach It
Survey classmates about favorite recess games, build linking-cube towers for each choice, then order the category counts from least to greatest.
Show a class graph and ask students to name one answerable question and cite the two numbers that support their answer.
Play Graph Detective: partners draw number cards, place them on a simple bar graph, then compare and order the represented values.
Use cafeteria fruit counts to choose the largest basket, then list all fruit counts from least to greatest.
