What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose books and other texts that match their interests or current class learning. They listen, read with support, and create drawings, labels, dictated sentences, or early writing connected to those texts.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student chooses a text from a small set and gives a clear reason for the choice. The student engages with the text, then draws, labels, dictates, or writes a related idea.

Common Misconceptions

Children may choose a book only because they like the cover, without checking what it is about. They may think writing requires complete sentences, rather than drawings, labels, copied words, or dictated ideas.

How to Assess It

Set out three picture books and ask each child to choose one connected to your current class topic. Have the child explain the choice, then draw and label one related idea.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place animal, weather, and family books in baskets; students sort them, choose one, and draw why it interests them.

  2. After a read-aloud, ask, “Which part connects to something you like or are learning?” Students share, then draw and label their response.

  3. Play Topic Match: name a class topic, then students choose the most related book cover from three options and explain their choice.

  4. Students make a library request card by drawing a topic they want to learn about and adding a title or label.
