What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students make thoughtful choices about what to read and write. They consider their own curiosity, the current unit, and the level of challenge. They follow through by reading and creating a related text.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students independently choose an appropriately challenging text and explain why it suits their interests and the class topic. They read it closely and produce a focused, connected piece of writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a text only because it is short, easy, or popular. They may focus on personal interest while ignoring the class topic, or assume academic writing cannot include their own interests.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Read three short excerpts, choose one, and give one personal reason and one academic reason for your choice. Then write four sentences responding to it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs six book and article cards to sort into “interest,” “unit fit,” or “both,” then choose one to read.

  2. Use the prompt, “What topic would you willingly read about, and how could it connect to our current unit question?”

  3. Play Topic Match: students pair text summaries with unit questions, then earn a point by defending each match.

  4. Read a local news article tied to the unit, then write a short recommendation for the class reading list.
