What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose reading and writing work that connects their interests with the questions and content of a grade-level unit. They explain their choices and complete the work with a clear purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student independently chooses an appropriately complex text and writing subject connected to the unit. The student explains the personal and academic value of each choice and completes both tasks with purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a text only because it seems entertaining, without checking its complexity or connection to the unit. Some assume academic reading cannot connect to personal interests or that choice means avoiding difficult material.

How to Assess It

After a ten-minute reading, ask students to name why they chose the text, connect it to the unit, and propose a related writing task.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out article excerpts around the room, then have students use sticky notes to mark personal interest and connections to the current unit.

  2. Ask students to write six sentences explaining how one personal interest could become a focused question for the current unit.

  3. Play a matching game with interest cards, unit question cards, and text summaries, then have teams defend their strongest match.

  4. Have students read a community or workplace publication related to the unit, then draft a response for its likely audience.
