Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students choose reading and writing topics that connect to their interests and current class learning. They explain why each choice fits their purpose and work with grade-level material.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student independently chooses an appropriately challenging text or writing topic. The student explains the personal and academic connection, then uses that connection to guide notes, questions, or a finished piece.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat choice as permission to pick an easy text with little substance. They may select an appealing topic but cannot explain its connection to class learning or their purpose.
How to Assess It: Give students three short, grade-level texts tied to the unit. After choosing and reading one, students state their personal and academic connection, then write a five-sentence response.

Lesson moves

Set out six varied texts, then have students browse, choose one, and attach a sticky note explaining their interest and academic connection.
Use the prompt, “Which unit topic connects to your life or interests, and what could you read or write to explore it?”
Run a card match with student interests, unit questions, and text summaries, then require partners to justify each match.
Have students choose a school or community issue, read a related article, and write a letter proposing one specific response.
