What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen for the two smaller words inside a spoken compound word. They say each part, blend two words, and remove one part to name what remains.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can split “football” into “foot” and “ball,” then blend “rain” and “coat” to say “raincoat.” The student can say “cake” when asked to remove “cup” from “cupcake.”

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse whole-word parts with syllables, treating any two-syllable word, such as “basket,” as a compound word. They may remove only the first sound or reverse the word order when blending.

How to Assess It

Say “snowman” and ask, “What two words do you hear?” Then ask, “Say snowman without snow.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs of picture cards, such as sun and flower, for students to join, say, separate, and say again.

  2. Ask, “What two words make playground, and what does each word mean?” Have partners explain their answers aloud.

  3. Play Compound Word Switch by changing one part of a word, such as turning toothbrush into hairbrush.

  4. Name classroom objects, such as backpack and bookshelf, then have students identify the two smaller words they hear.
