What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students share useful ideas during group work and build on classmates’ contributions. They listen closely, ask relevant questions, and give respectful feedback that helps improve the group’s work.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students enter discussions prepared, add relevant ideas, and connect their comments to what others have said. They give specific, respectful feedback that helps the group revise or make a decision.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think participation means speaking often, interrupting, or repeating a classmate’s point. Feedback may be vague, overly negative, or focused on the person rather than the work.

How to Assess It

Give groups five minutes to improve a weak paragraph. Use a checklist to record whether each student shares one idea, responds to a peer, and gives specific feedback.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups sentence strips from a scrambled paragraph, then require each student to propose and explain one placement before the group agrees.

  2. Ask students to write about which response helps more, “Good point” or “Your evidence supports the claim because,” then discuss their reasoning.

  3. Play Feedback Fix-It, where teams replace vague comments on cards with specific suggestions tied to a shared rubric.

  4. Have groups act as a school event committee, compare three proposals, give each presenter feedback, and choose one plan with written reasons.
