What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students share relevant ideas, listen closely, and respond to what classmates say. They help make group decisions and offer clear feedback that moves shared work forward.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students enter the conversation at suitable times, refer to a classmate’s point, and ask relevant questions. During group work, they complete their role and give specific, respectful suggestions that improve the project.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think participating means talking the most or agreeing with every suggestion. They may give vague praise, ignore classmates’ ideas, or criticize the person instead of the work.

How to Assess It

After a five-minute group discussion, ask each student to name one idea they shared, one peer idea they considered, and one specific suggestion they gave.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give teams sentence strips from a story, then have them agree on an order and record one suggestion that changed the arrangement.

  2. Discuss: Which classmate’s idea improved our group’s answer, and what made that idea useful?

  3. Play Feedback Relay: students rotate among draft posters, leaving one specific praise and one clear next-step note at each station.

  4. Plan a class celebration in committees, with each student proposing one choice, paraphrasing another proposal, and offering one practical revision.
