What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students share useful ideas during partner and group work. They listen without interrupting, respond to classmates, and offer kind, specific suggestions that help finish the task.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student shares an idea connected to the group task and waits while others speak. The student can respond politely, suggest a change, and help the group complete its work.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students think contributing means talking often or getting their own idea chosen. Others listen quietly but do not respond, or give feedback such as “That is bad” without a helpful reason.
How to Assess It
- Give pairs six blocks and say, “Build something together.” Use a checklist to record whether each child shares an idea, listens, and gives helpful feedback.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups paper shapes and tape to create one animal, with each child suggesting a part and commenting on another idea.
Show a playground picture and ask, “What should we add, and how could a classmate improve your idea?”
Play Suggestion Circle, where students pass an object and use the stems “I suggest” and “I like your idea because.”
Have teams plan how to organize a classroom supply shelf, then agree on labels and give one helpful suggestion before arranging it.
