What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students compare words and phrases with similar meanings, then choose the one that best fits their purpose, audience, and tone. They consult print or digital references to confirm differences in meaning and usage.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose the word or phrase that best matches the context, tone, and purpose. They use a dictionary, thesaurus, or usage guide to verify the choice and explain why alternatives fit less well.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat synonyms as interchangeable or assume the first dictionary definition always fits. They may also ignore tone, strength, formality, or connotation when choosing a word.

How to Assess It

Give students the sentence, “The coach was proud, pleased, or satisfied with the team’s effort.” Ask them to choose one word and justify it using a reference source.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards such as slim, skinny, and slender, then have them sort each word by tone and strength using dictionaries.

  2. Ask students to explain which verb best fits a news report, claimed, stated, admitted, or announced, and why.

  3. Play a synonym swap game where teams replace a highlighted word, then earn points for preserving meaning, tone, and formality.

  4. Compare wording from two product reviews, then revise one adjective to make the review more neutral, enthusiastic, or critical.
