What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students distinguish among words and phrases that seem similar but carry different shades of meaning, tone, or formality. They consult reliable print or digital references before choosing language for a specific audience and purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose words that fit the exact meaning, tone, audience, and context. They use dictionaries, thesauruses, and usage examples to confirm a choice, then explain why a close synonym would work less well.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat synonyms as interchangeable and ignore differences in tone, strength, or formality. They may accept the first thesaurus suggestion without checking a dictionary entry or usage example. They may also confuse denotation with connotation.

How to Assess It

Give students this sentence: “The witness was stubborn about her account.” Ask them to replace “stubborn” with “persistent” or “resolute,” then cite a resource and explain their choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards and dictionary entries, then have them sort synonyms by positive, neutral, or negative connotation and defend each placement.

  2. Ask students to compare “slim,” “skinny,” and “slender” in a product description, then explain which word best fits the intended audience.

  3. Play Synonym Swap: teams replace a highlighted word, verify the new word in a resource, and earn points for the most precise choice.

  4. Have students revise a mock email to a principal, replacing casual or harsh words with choices suited to a formal school message.
