What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students compare near-synonyms and choose the word or phrase that best fits the tone, context, and purpose. They check definitions, connotations, usage notes, and examples before explaining their choice.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain why “persistent” fits a recommendation letter better than “stubborn.” They can use a dictionary, thesaurus, or usage guide to revise wording and defend the change.

Common Misconceptions

Students often assume every thesaurus entry can replace the original word without changing meaning. They may check only the definition and ignore emotional associations, formality, common word pairings, or context.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: Choose examined, glanced at, scrutinized, or considered to replace “looked at” in a sentence about a committee reviewing a proposal. Cite one dictionary or usage source, then explain why your choice fits.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs synonym cards such as confident, arrogant, and self-assured, then have them sort the words by tone and formality.

  2. Ask students to explain which word best describes a demanding coach: strict, harsh, disciplined, or exacting.

  3. Play Context Match by having teams pair near-synonyms with sentences, then verify each match using a dictionary or usage guide.

  4. Compare two headlines about the same event, then identify how each writer’s word choices shape the reader’s reaction.
