What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify imagery, figurative language, sound devices, repetition, and line choices in poems. They explain how those choices shape meaning, tone, and rhythm, then apply them in writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students annotate specific words and line choices, then connect them to tone, meaning, or rhythm. They also use selected techniques purposefully in an original poem or revision.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label a device without explaining what it does. They may think every poem must rhyme, or confuse line breaks with complete sentences.
How to Assess It
- Give students an eight-line poem with imagery, repetition, and enjambment. Ask them to identify two choices, explain each effect, and revise one line intentionally.

Ways to Teach It
Print a poem on sentence strips, then have groups rearrange line breaks and explain how each version changes pace or emphasis.
Ask students to write which technique most shapes a poem’s mood, then defend their choice with two quoted details.
Play technique match-up using cards with examples, device names, and effects, with teams earning points for complete explanations.
Examine repetition and sound patterns in a song chorus or advertisement, then explain how they make the message memorable.
