What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find poetic techniques such as imagery, figurative language, repetition, sound patterns, and line breaks. They explain each technique's effect and use techniques in their own writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify techniques and explain how specific words or structures shape meaning, tone, or rhythm. They use techniques deliberately in their own poems and explain their choices.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a technique without explaining its effect. They may assume every poem must rhyme or confuse the speaker with the poet.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short poem. Ask them to identify one technique, quote an example, explain its effect, and add two lines using that technique.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a printed poem, scissors, and tape, then have them rearrange line breaks and compare how the rhythm and emphasis change.
Ask students to compare two stanzas and write which technique creates the stronger mood, using one quoted phrase as evidence.
Play a matching game with cards showing poetic techniques, examples, and effects, then require students to defend each completed set.
Examine a song lyric or advertisement for repetition, imagery, and figurative language, then explain how those choices influence the audience.
