What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students review assigned material, bring notes or evidence, and understand the group goal before meeting. They contribute relevant ideas, ask useful questions, and complete their assigned role.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A prepared student brings notes, cited evidence, and questions tied to the group goal. The student uses these materials to contribute, respond to others, and complete an assigned role.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think showing up with an unmarked text counts as preparation. They may also confuse frequent talking with useful participation or rely on classmates to supply evidence.
How to Assess It
- Before a five-minute group discussion, have each student submit one claim, two supporting details, and one question. Listen for each item during the discussion.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a short article, role cards, and sticky notes, then require each student to mark evidence before a ten-minute planning meeting.
Ask students to write: What preparation helps a group finish well, and what happens when one member comes unprepared?
Play Ready or Not by showing sample preparation folders and having teams identify what is missing from each one.
Have students prepare an agenda, notes, and questions for a mock student council meeting about improving the school lunch period.
