What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students complete assigned reading or research before meeting with a group. They bring notes, questions, materials, and ideas they can use to help complete the task.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A prepared student has completed the reading and brings useful notes, questions, and materials. The student can explain the group’s goal and contribute without waiting for others to provide the information.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think showing up with the assigned text counts as preparation. They may skim, copy notes, or rely on one classmate to explain the task.
How to Assess It
- Give students a one-page article for a five-minute group talk. Before joining, each student submits two annotations, one question, and one idea to contribute.

Ways to Teach It
Give each group a task folder, then have students annotate the source, write two questions, and choose a role before starting.
Ask students to write: What can you bring to a group discussion that helps others complete the task?
Play Preparation Relay, where teams earn points by matching discussion tasks with useful notes, materials, questions, and assigned roles.
Have groups plan a class fundraiser, requiring each student to research one cost or need before the planning meeting.
