What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students complete assigned reading or research, gather needed materials, and prepare notes before meeting with a group. They come ready with ideas, evidence, and questions that move the work forward.

What Mastery Looks Like

A prepared student brings completed notes, marked texts, and any assigned materials. During the meeting, the student uses that preparation to share evidence, ask relevant questions, and complete a group role.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think simply bringing the text means they are ready. They may skim without making notes, or assume active participation means talking often rather than contributing useful ideas.

How to Assess It

Before a four-minute discussion, have each student submit a prep card with one claim, one text detail, and one question. Listen for each student using the card.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a short article, agenda, and role cards, then have students build individual meeting folders with notes, evidence, and questions.

  2. Ask students to write: What will you bring, know, and contribute before your group begins its work?

  3. Play Prep Card Challenge, where students earn points for arriving with a claim, evidence, question, and needed material.

  4. Plan a mock student council meeting, with students preparing notes and proposals about one realistic school improvement.
