What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the parts and techniques writers use to build arguments. They explain how those choices affect readers, then use the techniques in their own speaking or writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain how a writer uses claims, evidence, reasoning, and counterclaims to influence readers. They can build a clear argument with relevant evidence and a logical response to an opposing view.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a strong opinion as a complete argument. They may use unrelated facts, ignore source credibility, or think mentioning a counterclaim weakens their position.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Label the claim, reason, evidence, counterclaim, and rebuttal in a short argument. Then add one relevant piece of evidence that strengthens it.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a printed argument to color-code the claim, reasons, evidence, counterclaim, and rebuttal, then compare their choices.
Discuss which evidence would best support a school policy change, then write two sentences explaining why it is credible and relevant.
Play an argument card sort where teams match claims with strong evidence, weak evidence, counterclaims, and effective rebuttals.
Examine a local advertisement or editorial, identify its argumentative techniques, and rewrite one section to make the argument more convincing.
