What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students take a clear position on a debatable issue and choose evidence that directly supports their reasons. They respond to an opposing view and close with a logical takeaway for the audience.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student states a debatable position and supports each reason with relevant facts, examples, or quotations. The student answers an opposing view fairly and ends by reinforcing the position without repeating it word for word.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat a topic as a claim, list facts without explaining them, or use evidence that does not fit. They may ignore the opposing view or weaken the ending by adding a new reason.

How to Assess It

Give students a school policy claim and three evidence choices. Ask them to select the strongest evidence, explain why it fits, address one counterclaim, and write a concluding sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups claim, evidence, counterclaim, and conclusion cards to sort into a logical argument, then remove any irrelevant evidence.

  2. Ask students to write one paragraph answering, “Should seventh graders have homework every night?” and include a fair response to the opposing view.

  3. Play Evidence Match, where teams pair claims with the strongest evidence card and earn a point by explaining each match.

  4. Have students write a proposal for one realistic school improvement, using survey results, an opposing concern, and a direct request to administrators.
