What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how writers build arguments with claims, evidence, reasoning, counterclaims, and persuasive appeals. They explain how those choices affect readers, then use the techniques in their own writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can mark the claim, evidence, reasoning, counterclaim, and response in a grade-level argument. They can explain each part’s effect and use these moves in their own paragraph.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat strong opinions as valid claims even when evidence is missing. They may label any opposing view as a counterclaim or name a technique without explaining its effect.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short argument and ask: “Name one technique, quote the words that show it, and explain how it supports the claim.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a cut-up argument to arrange into claim, evidence, reasoning, counterclaim, and response, then defend their order.
Ask students to write which technique makes a provided argument most convincing and support their choice with two quoted details.
Play Technique Match by pairing short argument excerpts with labels such as evidence, reasoning, counterclaim, rebuttal, and emotional appeal.
Compare two advertisements for the same product and identify how each uses facts, credibility, or emotion to influence buyers.
