What Students Need to Do

Students use background information, place, culture, time period, and current events to interpret what a text means. They also use those factors when making choices in their own writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can identify a relevant context detail and connect it to a character, idea, conflict, tone, or word choice. In their own writing, they make choices that fit a clear time, place, culture, or event.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat context as only the place and time of a text. They may list background facts without explaining how those facts shape meaning, language, or perspective.

How to Assess It

Give students a short passage and a three-sentence context note. Ask, "Which context detail most affects the passage, and how does it change your interpretation?"

   Give groups a passage, map, timeline, and culture cards, then have them match each context clue to a specific line in the passage.

   Ask students to write: "How would this text change if it were created in another place, time, or culture?"

3. 03

   Play Context Clue Match by having teams pair background facts with likely effects on a text, then defend each match.

4. 04

   Compare two news reports about the same event from different locations, and identify how audience and local concerns shape each report.
