What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan and deliver a speech so their voice and body language fit the goal and listeners. They make deliberate choices to emphasize ideas, show attitude, and hold attention.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can present the same short message differently to classmates and a formal audience. The delivery sounds natural, and eye contact, facial expressions, pauses, and gestures support the meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may read in a flat voice, rush, or add random gestures that distract from the message. They may think expression means speaking louder or making constant eye contact with one person.

How to Assess It

Ask students to announce a schedule change to either sixth graders or families at open house. Have them mark planned pauses, emphasis, and gestures, then deliver the announcement in 30 seconds.

Ways to Teach It

  1. In pairs, students record the same 30-second announcement twice, once for friends and once for the principal, then compare delivery choices.

  2. Write: Which voice and body choices would make a safety warning believable, and which would make listeners dismiss it?

  3. Draw audience and purpose cards, deliver one sentence to match both, and let classmates identify the cards from the delivery.

  4. Watch a short public service announcement, list three delivery choices, then present its message to a younger class.
