What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use features such as headings, captions, diagrams, maps, links, layout, and audio cues to understand subject-area texts. They explain how those choices support meaning and analysis.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students locate useful features in print, digital, visual, and audio texts. They explain how a feature adds information, organizes ideas, or supports an interpretation within the subject area.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat headings, diagrams, captions, links, or audio cues as decoration. They may name a feature without explaining how it clarifies content or shapes meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short science page with a heading, diagram, and caption. Ask them to explain which feature best supports one key idea and why.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a copied history page to cut apart, label each feature, and match it to the information it helps explain.
Ask students to write: Which feature changed your understanding most, and what would you miss without it?
Play Feature Detective with science articles, awarding points for finding a feature and explaining its effect on meaning.
Compare a weather alert webpage and radio announcement, then list how each format helps people understand and act on the forecast.
