What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use titles, headings, text structure, character actions, and key details to anticipate what may come next. As they read, they record, check, and revise their predictions using new evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student makes a reasonable prediction supported by a specific detail or text feature. The student checks that prediction while reading and explains why new evidence confirms or changes it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a prediction as a random guess or make only one before reading. They may label predictions right or wrong without explaining how later details confirmed or changed their thinking.
How to Assess It
- Give students a one-page unfamiliar text with a marked stopping point. Ask them to predict what comes next, cite one clue, then read on and explain whether they confirmed or revised their prediction.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a story cut into four sections; after each section, they place a sticky note prediction beside the clue that supports it.
At a pause point, ask, “What do you expect next, which clue led you there, and what new detail could change your mind?”
Play Prediction Detective: teams earn one point for a text-based prediction and another for revising it accurately after reading the next paragraph.
Read a weather alert or sports preview, predict the next reported details, then compare predictions with the full report.
