What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use titles, pictures, and details already read to tell what may happen or be explained next. They check each idea as reading continues and revise it when new clues appear.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student gives a sensible prediction and points to a clue that supports it. After reading more, the student says whether the prediction was confirmed or changes it with a clear reason.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess from personal preference instead of using clues from the text or pictures. They may see a wrong prediction as failure, or forget to update it when new information appears.

How to Assess It

Show the cover and read two pages of a new book. Ask students to name what may come next, give one clue, then keep or change their idea after the next page.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs three picture cards from a familiar story; they order them, add a blank card, and draw the likely next event.

  2. Pause before a page turn and ask, "What comes next, and which picture or word gives you that idea?"

  3. Play Prediction Detective: teams earn a token for naming a clue, making a prediction, and revising it after the next page.

  4. Use the daily schedule, hide the final activity, and have students predict it from the time, materials, and earlier routines.
