What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use titles, headings, pictures, prior events, and text details to anticipate what may come next. As they read, they mark each prediction as confirmed, revised, or disproved.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students give a reasonable prediction based on specific clues, not just personal preference. They track their thinking and explain why later details confirm, change, or disprove the prediction.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat predictions as random guesses or assume every prediction must be correct. They may also forget to revise predictions when new details appear.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short passage with the ending covered. Ask them to predict the ending, cite two clues, then uncover it and explain whether they would confirm or revise their prediction.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sticky notes and a short text; they place each prediction before a page turn, then move it to confirmed, revised, or disproved.
Pause after paragraph two and ask, “What will come next, and which two details support your thinking?”
Play Prediction Detective: teams earn one point for a sensible prediction and another for citing a clue that supports it.
Show a weather forecast, then compare its predicted conditions with the next day’s weather and discuss why forecasts change.
