What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose books, articles, and writing topics that match their interests and the class learning goal. They read closely, create a related text, and explain why each choice fits.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given several options, a student selects a grade-appropriate text that clearly connects to the current topic and gives a specific reason. The student completes the reading and produces focused writing that uses relevant ideas or evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose only by cover, length, or familiarity, without checking whether a text fits the class topic. They may think personal interest alone is enough, or copy facts from a source instead of shaping an original response.

How to Assess It

Give students three short text blurbs tied to the current unit. Ask, “Which would you read, what makes it relevant, and what would you write after reading it?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out six books and articles; students sort them into “fits our unit,” “fits my interests,” or “fits both,” then choose one.

  2. Have students write, “What topics do I return to, and how could one connect to our unit?” then share one answer.

  3. Play Match the Purpose: teams pair text summaries with class topics and reader profiles, earning a point for each clear justification.

  4. Ask students to choose a school or community issue, read one related article, and draft a letter proposing a practical response.
