What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose reading materials and writing topics for a clear reason. Their choices may connect to personal interests, classroom learning, or both. They read and create texts that fit those choices.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student independently chooses readable texts that connect to an interest or class topic. The student reads with purpose and creates related writing using original ideas.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a book only because of its cover or length. They may think assigned class topics cannot connect to their own interests. Some students copy words from a text instead of writing their own ideas.
How to Assess It
- Offer four short texts about a current class topic. Ask each student to choose one, read it, and write two related sentences.

Ways to Teach It
Let students sort classroom books into interest and unit-topic baskets, then choose one book to read.
Ask, “Which class topic connects to something you enjoy?” and have students write and share two sentences.
Play Topic Match by pairing picture cards with short texts, then choosing one matched pair as a writing idea.
Students read a school sign, menu, or notice, then write a new notice that classmates could use.
